In 1949, in a divided Europe, Nobel laureate Thomas Mann and his daughter Erika return to Germany for the first time after sixteen years in exile. Travelling in a black Buick from American-controlled Frankfurt to Soviet-controlled Weimar, they cross a country devastated by war and divided by new borders.

Paweł Pawlikowski turns the journey into an intimate reckoning with homeland, family fractures, identity, love and guilt — and with the question of whether returning can ever truly mean coming home.
