WITH ITS MASTERCLASS, THE FESTIVAL OF TOLERANCE CONTRIBUTES TO THE VISIBILITY OF CROATIAN FILM

15.03.2019.

Croatian cinematography has recently been experiencing great success at the international scene, but at home these successes have not gained much attention. In order to contribute to the visibility of Croatian film, the Festival of Tolerance brings the Masterclass of Tolerance – a new program as part of which eminent Croatian filmmakers will discuss the creation of their films before a live audience and in front of cameras. As part of the 13th iteration of the Festival, Bobo Jelčić will discuss the making of his film A Stranger (Obrana i zaštita), and Nebojša Slijepčević will reveal how he made his documentary Srbenka. The Masterclass will be shot with cameras, edited, and will then be available to anyone interested through the festival's online service.

”One of the biggest problems of Croatian film is its poor availability after all the cinema and festival opening nights have passed, and very little, if anything, is known about the making of the films. The Festival of Tolerance has decided to tackle this problem at this year’s and future iterations of the Festival, to promote Croatian cinematography, its filmmakers and numerous successful films dealing with social issues and questioning, invoking and promoting tolerance”, says Hrvoje Pukšec, Head of the film programs at the Festival of Tolerance.

With his film A Stranger, awarded with numerous domestic and international awards, director Bobo Jelčić deals with life in his divided hometown of Mostar, through an insightful psychological portrait of a man forced to cross the invisible border between the two communities. The documentary film Srbenka, directed by Nebojša Slijepčević, follows the rehearsals for the theater play by Oliver Frljić dealing with the murder of the Serb girl Aleksandra Zec. Among numerous other awards, the film has received the prestigious DocAlliance award for best documentary of 2018 in Cannes.
